About Shel Silverstein
Shel Silverstein, also known by the nickname "Uncle Shelby", was a renowned American author of children’s books, poet, cartoonist, songwriter and playwright whose most notable works include the 1964 children's picture book The Giving Tree and the 1974 children's poetry book Where the Sidewalk Ends. He is also remembered for writing the song A Boy Named Sue, which was made popular by Johnny Cash.
Personal Life
He fathered two children, including daughter Shoshanna, who died at the premature age of 11.
Achievements
In 1970, he won a Grammy Award for his song A Boy Named Sue. The song ended up becoming Johnny Cash's most successful song.
He won a second Grammy Award in 1984.
In 2002, he was honored with a posthumous induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
