Family and Education
He was born in New York City to Charles Sheldon Whitehouse and Mary Celine Rand. He is the grandson of the former U.S. Minister to Guatemala Edwin Sheldon Whitehouse. He studied at St. Paul’s School and Yale College. He also went to the University of Virginia School of Law and obtained his Juris Doctor degree.
He married Sandra Thornton, who is the granddaughter of James Worth Thornton, in 1986 and they both are parents of two children.
Political Career
Before becoming a politician, he served as a lawyer. He started his law career in 1982, when he became the clerk to the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, Justice Richard Neely. He also worked as an assistant attorney and chief of the regulatory unit. In 1992, the former governor of Rhode Island, Bruce George Sundlun promoted him to be the director of business regulation.
His political career began in 1994 when he was appointed by the former president of America Bill Clinton to serve as the United States Attorney for Rhode Island. During his service as the attorney for Rhode Island, he halted a lot of activities that could endanger the environment. He also held other positions, including United States Senator and the Chair of the Senate Narcotics Caucus.

He was portrayed by John Rothman in the movie “The Report” in 2019.
Whitehouse is known for being a big supporter of LGBTQ rights.
