About Sholem Asch
An accomplished Polish-Jewish essayist and novelist of his age, Sholem Asch was a major pioneer of Yiddish literature. Most of his essays were about the traditional Jewish culture during a revolutionary period.
Background
One of 10 surviving children of a poor Hasidic family in Russian-controlled Poland, he attended Kutno's Hebrew school.
Notable Works
In the early 1900, while living in Warsaw, he penned his first Yiddish story “Moyshele.” The work was later published in the Der yud magazine. In 1904, he published in a Yiddish daily, Der fraynd, his first major works “A shtetl,” and followed up with his first play, “Tsurikgekumen” a year later.
In 1914, he moved to New York and spent almost 25 years writing for the Yiddish newspaper, Forverts. During his last years, he published such Jewish-themed works as “1st River,” “Der brenendiker dorn,” “Moyshe” and his last completed novel “Der norvi.”
Recognition
In 1932, he was appointed the president of the Yiddish PEN club.
