About Sidney Poitier
Sidney Poitier was a legendary Bahamian-American actor and director famous for starring in films such as Edge of the City, The Defiant Ones, A Raisin in the Sun, Lilies of the Field and The Jackal. He is considered one of the greatest male actors of classic Hollywood cinema. As a film director, he directed films such as A Piece of the Action, Let's Do It again and Ghost Dad.
Achievements
He won his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964 for his role in the film Lilies of the Field becoming the first Bahamian and first African-American to win the award. In 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama honored him with the United States' highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Trivia
He was the non-resident Bahamian ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2007.
