The Italian actress was born into poverty during World War II. She trained as a professional dancer and model and won the Miss Rome pageant at 16 in 1946. Silvana found herself in the world of cinema in 1949, where she began her journey in filmmaking.
Career Highlights
Silvana landed her first film contract in 1949, where she performed excellently in “Bitter Rice”. Directed and written by Italian filmmaker Giuseppe De Santis, the movie went ahead to be one of her popular productions even though it was just her debut.
The Italian actress then went on to appear in films such as “mambo,” “The scientific”, “The Gold of Naples”, and “Death in Venice”. The latter, which was directed and co-written by Luchino Viconti, saw Silvana star alongside English actor Dirk Bogarde and Swedish actress Björn Andrésen.
Personal life and death
Silvana married renowned film producer Dino De Laurentiis in 1949. The couple had four children – Raffaella, Francesca, Veronica, and Federico. Silvana and Dino went their separate ways in 1983 and then divorced in 1988. A year later, the Italian actress and model died of lung cancer.
