Sir Andre Konstantin Geim is a world-leading physicist and a professor at the University of Manchester. He has achieved numerous successes in his career, including winning a Nobel Prize in Physics, Mott Medal Prize and EPS Europhysics Prize.
Background & Education
He was born in Sochi, Russia. However, he holds dual citizenship in Great Britain and the Netherlands. He received his master’s degree from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) in 1982 and earned his Ph.D. in metal physics from the Institute of Solid State Physics (ISSP) in 1987.
Academic Career
From 1987 until 1990, the physicist worked as a research scientist at Chernogolovka’s Institute for Microelectronics Technology and High Purity Materials. From 1990 to 1994, he held postdoctoral appointments at the Universities of Bath, Nottingham and Copenhagen. Between 1994 and 2000, he was an associate physics professor at Radboud University Nijmegen. In 2001, he was appointed as a physics professor at the University of Manchester.
Nobel Prize
In 2004, he worked with Konstantin Novoselov and other colleagues to successfully isolate graphene from a hexagonal lattice. They shared the idea that graphene could be an ideal material for computer chips, solar cells and touch screens. In 2010, he received the “Nobel Prize in Physics” jointly with Novoselov for their work and research on graphene.
