About Smedley Butler
Dubbed “Maverick Marine,” Smedley Butler was one of the most decorated and revered senior US Marine Corps officers of the 20th century and World War I. He won several medals and honors for his over three decades of service as a US Marine and participation in several military actions in China, the Philippines, France, and Central America.
Early Life
He was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He received primary education at West Chester Friends Graded High School and then graduated from high school at Haverford School in Philadelphia. At 16 and against his father’s wishes, he left school to enlist in the US Marine Corps in 1898 during the “Spanish-American War.”
Army Experience & Honors
He was a US Marine for 34 years. He fought in the “Mexican Revolution,” “Philippine-American War,” “World War I,” “Banana Wars,” and the “Boxer Rebellion.”
He was linked to the famous “Business Plot” in 1933. Thus, he reported to a congressional committee that an affluent group of industrialists had planned to overthrow US President Franklin D. Roosevelt through a military. Although all individuals involved initially denied the plot, investigations proved some of his testimonies were true.
He received 16 medals of honors, including the prestigious “Brevet Medal.”
Death
He died at age 58 on June 21, 1940, after battling cancer of the gastrointestinal tract.
