About Stan Kenton
Stan Kenton was one of the most influential jazz performers during the 1940s to the 1960s. His rise to stardom began at age 16 when he started performing at a hamburger eatery. The pianist and composer joined the Francis Gilbert Territory music group in 1932, and moved to the Everett Hoagland Orchestra the following year.
In 1944, he issued an album which was titled “Artistry in Rhythm”. The work, which was produced by Capitol Records, peaked at number two in the United States. He went on to publish other successful albums like “The Jazz Compositions of Dee Barton”.
The American musician led a self-named orchestra which was very popular between 1941 and 1961.
Family
He was raised by his parents Stella and Floyd Kenton alongside two sisters called Erma Mae and Beulah. His first marriage to Violet Rhoda Peters ended in 1950. He later married singer Ann Richards. He had a daughter named Leslie.
Education
The singer was a student of Bell High School.
Recognitions
He was the recipient of many laurels including the Edison Award, and the Grammy Awards. He was also inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the International Association for Jazz Education Hall of Fame.
Trivia
Some popular musicians that he worked with were Laurindo Almeida and Milt Bernhart.
In 1959, he created Indiana University’s Stan Kenton Jazz Camp.
