About Stephen Appiah
Former Ghana international and the captain of the senior team Stephen Appiah is a retired professional football player. He was a midfielder on the Ghana national team between 1995 and 2010. He represented the team at different levels including the youth, Olympic and senior levels. His club football career saw him play for a number of top European clubs, including Juventus and Fenerbahce.
Family
His son Rodney Appiah is also a professional footballer. Rodney has been associated with Accra Great Olympics in the Ghana Premier League.
Career
Appiah began his career at local club Hearts of Oak in 1995, at age.15 where he played for two years and scored 19 goals. His time with the club saw him win the 1996/97 Ghana Premier League.
In 1997, he travelled abroad to join Italian team Udinese, where he started as a striker. He played two seasons with Parma between 2000 and 2003 before moving to Brescia for the 2002–03 season. At Brescia he scored a total of seven goals and moved on to Juventus for another two seasons. With the Italian giants, he found the net seven goals. He went on to play for Turkish side Fenerbahce from 2005 to 2008, registering over 10 goals in the period. Other clubs that he played for include Bologna and Vojvodina.
Appiah’s career with the Ghana senior team, the Black Stars, began in 1995 during the Ghana – Benin match in Cotonou.
He became the captain of the national team in 2006, leading them to its first FIFA World Cup in 2006 and in 2010.
By the end of his international career, he had 67 caps and scored 14 international goals.
Awards
He won the “Ghana Footballer of the Year” in 2005 and 2007
He also won the “Footballer of the Year” in Turkey in 2007
With Parma, he won the Coppa Italia in the 2001/02 season.
The midfielder won the 2006/07 Turkish premier league with Fenerbahce.
