Family and Education
Colbert was born into a Catholic family; one of 11 children and he was born to James William Colbert and Lorna Elizabeth Tuck. He suffered a great grief as a child when he lost his father and 2 brothers in an airplane crash. Colbert graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Bachelor of Arts. Stephen is a Democrat who is heavily involved in politics.
He has a long marital relationship with Evelyn McGee, who he married in 1993 and together they have children.
Career Highlights
The American comedian developed interest in acting during his days at Northwestern University and he participated in some theatre plays in the school. After his graduation, he worked as a receptionist at Second City box office. Through his works at Second City, he earned some exposure in acting and a few years later, he was given the opportunity to host the comedy series “Exit 57” with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello.
In 1996, he left the show following its cancellation and that same year, he became part of the unsuccessful series “Dana Carvey” Show. He stayed with the show for about four months and during those days, he wrote and also made appearances in the show with Steve Carell, Robert Smigel and Charlie Kaufman. As a result of an unsuccessful start, the show was cancelled after only seven episodes. Colbert went ahead to host shows including “The Late Show” in 2015.
As a politician, he is a member of the Democratic Party and in 2005, he founded the “The Colbert Report” show with Ben Karlin and Jon Stewart. The show placed much emphasis on current political issues that transpired in America.
Awards
Colbert won an Emmy Award in 2008 as the writer for the show “The Colbert Report”.
He released “A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All” album in 2008 and it earned him a Grammy Award as “Best Comedy Album”.
Trivia
Colbert used the word ‘truthiness’ for the 1st time on his show and the word was subsequently entered into the Webster’s English dictionary. He has a desk in the shape of the letter ‘C’ for his last name. The San Francisco Zoo has an eagle named after him. The International Space Station named their treadmill after him, the Colbert.
