Stephen E. Ambrose, in full, Stephen Edward Ambrose was a highly prolific 20th-century American author and historian. His books earned prominence for their capacity to inspire a renewed appreciation for American leaders. In addition, he wrote many best-selling history books, notably the biographies of former US Presidents Richard Nixon and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Early Life & Education
Lovington, Illinois was his birthplace, and he grew up in Whitewater, Wisconsin. He attended Whitewater High School and was a 1957 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He held a master’s degree in history from Louisiana State University and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Career Highlights & Major Works
In 1964, he worked at John Hopkins as an associate editor for the famous “Eisenhower Papers”. He was soon commissioned as the author of the official biography of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In addition, he also wrote official biographies of President Richard Nixon.
He became popular for writing “Undaunted Courage”, his bestselling history book on the famous explorers Clark and Lewis, “Nothing Like It in the World”, about the history of the “Pacific Railroad”.
Although he was heavily criticized for plagiarism, he maintained his status as a renowned author. In addition, he co-founded New Orleans’ “National D-Day Museum”.
Death
The historian died from lung cancer at age 66 on October 13, 2002.
