About Stephen F. Austin
After his father’s death, Stephen F. Austin inherited the empresario grant which was given to his dad by the Spanish government. The grant allowed him to settle in Texas. After moving to the place, Austin convinced a number of Americans to relocate to Texas.
He was able to influence about 300 families to the new site which earned him the description "Father of Texas". In 1836, he was appointed as the Secretary of State, becoming the first person to hold that position.
Family
His father Moses Austin was a very successful American businessman. Mary Brown Austin, his mother, also helped in his development alongside a sister named Emily.
Education
From Bacon Academy, Austin enrolled at Transylvania University.
Trivia
Stephen was also a lawyer. Many institutions in Texas have been named after him including the Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Austin College in Sherman and the state’s capital city.
