Personal Life
He loved soccer and was an All-State soccer player in school. His grandfather was a writer whom he aspired to be like. At a point in his life, he began using drugs and could not deal with his addictions especially when all three of his drug suppliers were arrested. At that point, he wanted to kill himself. During his recovery meeting in 1997, he met Michael McCraine who was an actress. They had two children but did not get married. In 2007, he married Marion Mortimer and had a daughter and son with her.
Career
He was the screenplay writer for “Traffic” which generated a lot of debate. Someone mentioned that it was unrealistic for one of the characters to have straight A’s whiles being a drug addict. He argued that he had been in that situation before and it was entirely possible. In 2000, he wrote the screenplay for “Rules of Engagement” then “The Alamo” in 2004. In 2005, he wrote both “Syriana” and “Havoc”.
Achievements
For his work on “Traffic”, he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
