Stephen Sondheim is a multiple Grammy Award-winning lyricist and composer whose best known works include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and West Side Story.
He received a Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Sunday in the Park with George in 1985 and an Academy Award for Best Song for Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man) in 1990. He was also given a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre in 2008.
For his decades of contribution to music, Sondheim received the highest civilian award in the United States in 2015 when President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a ceremony held in the White House.
He was in a relationship with dramatist Peter Jones and lived with him for eight years.
He said he initially wanted to become a mathematician and that becoming a composer was something that happened by chance.
