About Steve Ditko
The American artist and comic writer, Steve Ditko was famous as the creator of several fictional characters including “Spider-Man”, “The Creeper”, “Shade the Changing Man” and “Doctor Strange”.
Background and Early Life
In 1945, he completed Greater Johnstown High School. He sketched comics for an Army newspaper throughout his military service with Allied-occupied Germany.
Career
In 1950, he enrolled in School of Visual Arts, then Cartoonists and Illustrators School where he was taught by Jerry Robinson, an American comic book artist. Due to his hard work and capabilities, he won a scholarship the next year with the help of his teacher.
In 1953, he started writing comic books as a professional. His first work was "Stretching Things" which was published in 1954 by Farrell Publications. Gillmor Magazines published his second work, "Paper Romance”.
Charlton Comics publication was the first to hire him in 1954. His debut work for the company was "Cinderella", a vampire story. In 1956, he joined Atlas Comics, later named Marvel Comics.
Family Life
He was the second child of Anna and Stephen Ditko. His siblings were Anna Marie, Elizabeth and Patrick.
Awards and Honors
He won the Alley Award for “Best Short Story" with Stan Lee in 1962. He also won the Alley Award for “Best Adventure Hero Comic Book” in 1963.
