About Steve Fossett
Prior to being known for his record-setting adventures around the world, James Stephen Fossett had found success as a businessman. He had gone into business consultancy with the likes of Deloitte and Touche and Marshall Field’s after bagging an MBA.
He went on to thrive as a commodities salesman for Merill Lynch and Drexel Burnham before setting up his own company, Marathon Securities and Lakota Trading in 1980.
Due to his love for adventure, he became a pacesetter in the fields of aviation and sailing.
Family life
He was raised in Garden Grove, California, where he involved himself in Boy Scout activities from his pre-teen years. His 1968 marriage to Peggy Viehland ended with his death in 2007 and was childless.
Achievements
He has been an inductee of the Balloon and Airship Hall of Fame since 1997 and the Aviation Hall of Fame since July 2007. He was honored with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale’s Gold Medal in 2002.
Death
He disappeared in a light aircraft he was flying on September 3, 2007. He had taken off at a private airstrip near Smith Valley in Nevada.
After attempts to find him failed, he was declared dead legally in February 2008.
