About Syd Hoff
Syd Hoff was a brilliant 20th-century American cartoonist and author. He was a profound children’s book author, writing over 60 children’s books in his career. Additionally, his cartoons were featured in many adverts for various companies, including Eveready Batteries and Ralston Cereal.
Early Life & Education
He began drawing cartoons at age four. During high school, the famous cartoonist Milt Gross told him he would become a great cartoonist. With that inspiration, he enrolled at New York City’s “National Academy of Design” at age 16. At age 18, Hoff sold his first cartoon to the popular American magazine, “The New Yorker.”
Career Highlights
In the 1930s, he became famous for his lovely cartoons in “The New Yorker” magazine, depicting the life of middle and lower-class people in New York City.
Hoff began making his ten-year-run comic strip, “Tuffy,” for the “Hearst Syndicate” in 1939. In 1940, Dial published his first children’s book, “Muscles and Brains.”
However, he is best remembered for his fourth title children’s book, “Danny and the Dinosaur.” It sold over 10 million copies and was translated into many languages during his lifetime.
He also wrote various political cartoons under his pseudonym “A. Redfield.”
Death
He died of pneumonia, aged 90, in May 2004.
