About Syngman Rhee
Syngman Rhee was a legendary South Korean politician who served as the first president of both the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea and South Korea. He served three terms as president and the tensions on the Korean Peninsula had a significant impact on his presidency.
Although he opposed communism Syngman was a very authoritarian leader and saw himself to be essential, fundamental, and irreplaceable to his country.
He affiliated himself with the United States and, as a young nationalist, campaigned against Russia's and Japan's dominance on Korea.
Syngman was a powerful leader who implemented significant and progressive changes, but his techniques to secure his rule were often controversial. As a three-term president, he focused most of his energy on rewriting the constitution in order to reclaim the presidency. As public knowledge of his government's authoritarianism, fraudulent activities, and limited economic development developed, he was forced to step down.
He was married to Franziska Donner, his second wife, between 1934 and 1965. Prior to that, his wife was Seungseon Park, from 1890 until 1910.
The Korean politician attended the following institutions:
- George Washington University
- Harvard University
- Princeton University
- Pai Chai School
He brought substantial social change to Korea by expanding secondary and university education options, which significantly helped the country's youth.
He signed the Land Reform Act in June 1949, which enabled millions of sharecroppers to become small proprietors, decreasing socioeconomic disparities.
He worked as a teacher after high school.
He was the lone survivor of a simple rural family.
He was arrested at one of his early political rallies and spent five years in jail, during which time he converted to Methodism.
His son Rhee Bong-su died in 1908.
Syngman died in 1965 due to a stroke.
