About Tadamichi Kuribayashi
Tadamichi Kuribayashi was a former army general who led the imperial Japanese army to victory in the Battle of Hong Kong and Iwo Jima. He died in 1945 while leading his army in an ambush against the United States.
Early Life
Kuribayashi was born into a family of samurais. He was very steadfast and quite controversial. As a youth, his courage and hot-blooded character aided him in a strike against the school authorities of his high school, Nagano High School. Against all odds, he graduated in 1911. The young man was encouraged to join the Imperial Japanese Army, where he graduated in 1914. He went on to graduate from the Army War College in 1923. He finally completed his studies at Harvard University in the United States.
Career
Kuribayashi's career was one of fulfillment and complete devotion to the Imperial Japanese Army. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1933 and later to Major General in 1940. Three years later, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and then given command of the 2nd Imperial Guard Division.
The Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the most historic battles in World War II, set General Kuribayashi’s name above the rest when he held his ground with his soldiers against the United States Marine troops for a staggering 36 days. It was an astonishing feat and a shock to the adversary since they expected Kuribayashi's army to give up in less than 5 days. In the end, the Japanese general died in action.
Personal Life
Kuribayashi married Yoshii Kuribayashi in 1904. A son and two daughters survived him.
