About Tadao Ando
What sets Japanese architect Tadao Ando apart from his contemporaries is the fact that he was self-taught. He had started working on a career as a boxer while in high school but a school trip to Tokyo during which he saw the Imperial Hotel piqued his interest in architecture and changed his life.
Some of his most famous works and buildings around the world include the Row House in Sumiyoshi (Japan), the Pulitzer Arts Foundation (United States), the Gunma Insect World Insect Observation Hall (Japan), the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (United States) and the Museum SAN (South Korea).
Family Life
He grew up in Osaka, where his great-grandmother started raising him from when he turned two. He has a younger brother.
Achievements
Accolades received throughout his career include the Pritzker Prize, Alvar Aalto Medal, RIBA Royal Gold Medal, Carlsberg Architectural Prize, and Neutra Medal for Professional Excellence.
