About Takeda Shingen
Takeda Shingen, dubbed the “Tiger of Kai” was one of the most famous and revered Japanese military leaders. He was arguably the most powerful “Daimyō” who used his exceptional skills to struggle for the mastery of the “Kantō Plain” during the “Sengoku period” in the 16th century. His life and the events of his era are much celebrated in Japanese history, folklore and drama.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Kai Province, Japan. In 1536, at age 15, he helped his father Takeda Nobutora (head of the Takeda clan), to win the “Battle of Un no Kuchi”.
However, in 1541, he rebelled against his father, caused him to retire and succeeded as the head of the “Takeda clan”.
Leadership & Battles
During his leadership of the Takeda family in the 1530s, he expanded the clan’s domains into lands near Kai and the Shinano province. However, in 1551, he joined the priesthood and assumed “Shingen” as his Buddhist name.
He is widely remembered for his series of fights and battles with famous warrior Uesugi Kenshin between 1553 and 1564. Then, in 1573, he defeated Tokugawa Ieyasu and his army and made significant inroads into his territories.
Death
He died at age 51 on May 13, 1573, after battling pneumonia.
