About Talbert Abrams
Dubbed “the Father of Aerial Photography,” Abrams was a North American pioneer in early photography and mapping technology. He founded the Abrams Aerial Survey Corporation in 1923 and served as its president for over three decades.
Early Years
Growing up on a farm near Tekonsha, Michigan, he was so fascinated with the invention of the Wright brothers that he was spurred on to take a career in aviation. After enlisting in the aviation section of the US Marines during World War I, he started taking aerial photographs to meet the nation’s increasing demands for aerial images.
Notable Achievements
Following the birth of his aerial survey company, Abrams established two other companies, the Abrams Instrument Corporation and Abrams Aircraft Corporation in the 1930s. His companies were primarily concerned with research and developing technologies and planes in aerial photography. His achievements set the tone for modern aerial mapping.
Legacy
The Talbert Abram Award is presented every year by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing in recognition of outstanding contributions to aerial photography and mapping.
