About Tamara Tunie
Tamara Tunie had her first acting role in a 1981 Broadway production titled “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music”, which had actress and singer Lena Horne as the star performer. She earned her first on-screen role six years later when she brought life into the Jessica Griffin character in the television series “As the World Turns”.
That same year, she made her movie debut in “Sweet Lorraine” which starred Maureen Stapleton. She’s perhaps known for her role as Melinda Warner in the television program “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.
Personal Life
She spent her early life in McKeesport, a city in Pennsylvania. She was raised by her parents James W. Tunie and Evelyn Hawkins. Between 1988 and 1991, she was married to Greg Bouquett. Her marriage to Gregory Generet ended in divorce in 2018.
Education
She’s a product of Carnegie Mellon University where she studied Musical Theatre.
Honors
At the 2003 and 2004 NAACP Image Awards, she was shortlisted for the “Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series” award for her role in “As the World Turns”. In 2007, she received the “Best Musical” prize at the Tony Awards event for her role in “Spring Awakening”.
Her role in the play titled “Familiar” earned her the “Distinguished Performance by an Actress” accolade at the 2016 Obie Award.
Trivia
In the 1970s, she participated in a beauty pageant known as “Miss Black Teenage” in Pittsburgh.
She worked as one of the board of directors for a Harlem-based non-profit organization called Figure Skating.
Her popularity has increased due to her work with a number of charitable organizations including Hearts of Gold.
