Teesta Setalvad is one of India’s most famous civil rights activists and an outspoken journalist. She has won several international accolades during her career and is best known as the secretary of “Citizens for Justice and Peace.”
Background & Personal life
She is from an affluent Gujarati Hindu family and was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Setalvad graduated from Bombay University in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy.
She married fellow Indian journalist Javed Anand in 1987. They have two children together.
Career Highlights
Her journalism career was initiated when she began working for “The Daily (India).” She later wrote and reported for “The Indian Express” newspapers and “Business media” magazine. She covered the “1984 riots in Bhiwandi.”
However, she and her spouse quit their jobs in 1993 because of the “Hindu-Muslim riots in Mumbai.” They then took to the production of “Communalism Combat,” a popular monthly magazine.
Together with her husband and six other people, they formed the NGO, “Citizens for Justice and Peace,” in April 2002. The organization has co-petitioned the court in a criminal trial against “Narendra Mondi” and other government officials for the casualties during the “Gujarat riots of 2002.” It also provides aid to the victims of the riot.
Her primary role as an activist has been to campaign for the privileges and rights of Muslims, women, and Dalits.
