About Terry Melcher
Terry Melcher’s musical style is credited for shaping surf music during the 1960s. Within that period, he teamed up with Bruce Johnston to form the group known as Bruce & Terry. After a number of hit songs, they joined another group known as The Rip Chords. They are known for the song "Hey Little Cobra" which broke into the Top 10 in the United States.
As a producer
Melcher was more successful as a producer than singer. After leaving the group, he joined Columbia Records where he had the opportunity to work with American rock collective, The Byrds. He was best known for producing the group’s 1965 albums entitled “Turn! Turn! Turn!” and “Mr. Tambourine Man”.
He also worked with other top artistes such as Gentle Soul, Paul Revere & the Raiders, and Beach Boys.
Family
His maiden name was Terrence Paul Jorden. He was born to popular singer and actress Doris Day. His dad was called Al Jorden. He changed his surname after Martin Melcher, his mum’s later husband, adopted him.
He was married to a woman called Terese, with whom he had a son named Ryan.
Death
He was diagnosed with melanoma which later caused his death at age 62.
Trivia
Melcher was said to be a member of the infamous Manson Family.
He was one of the writers of Beach Boys’ 1988 hit single "Kokomo".
