The American jazz and television performer has played in several bands and orchestras such as Teddy Wilson’s orchestra and American saxophonist Coleman Hawkins orchestra, and the Count Basie Orchestra. She also recorded many songs as a solo artist with record labels such as Majestic Records, Columbia Records and Coral Records.

She was an only child to Fred and Mary Carpenter.

She studied at Girls’ Commercial High School.
Career
The singer became a band vocalist with American jazz composer Teddy Wilson’s singing group in 1939. The band recorded songs such as “This Is the Moment” and “Love Grows on the White Oak Tree”. She was also a vocalist with American singer Helen Humes on the Count Basie Orchestra in 1943 and recorded popular songs such as “I Didn’t Know About You” and “I Dream of You”.
The singer also appeared on American performer Eddie Cantor's radio show during the 1945–46 season. Her other television appearances include starring on the romantic comedy television series “Barefoot in the Park” and “The Devil’s Daughter” as well the feature film “The Wiz”.
Other Works
Carpenter appeared on the 1993 all-star NBC-TV special “Apollo Theater Hall of Fame”.
