About Theodor Mommsen
German historian Theodor Mommsen was regarded as being “the greatest living master of the art of historical writing”. He famously received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902 for his work “A History of Rome”. He was also active in German politics.
Life
Mommsen was born in the Duchy of Schleswig, which was under the rule of the Danish monarchy. He received his diploma in Greek and Latin and later enrolled at the University of Kiel.
Following his studies, he taught Roman history in Berlin. Mommsen was also active in German politics. He joined the nationalist liberalism movement, speaking against anti-Semitism.
Works
Mommsen received academic training in history and law. In 1902, a year before his death, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for vivid and empathetic writing style in “A History of Rome.” The German author wrote over 1,000 works throughout his career.
Influence
His works inspired many later writers and playwrights, including Bernard Shaw and Heiner Müller.
