Theodore F. Morse was a highly talented American music composer of the late 19th century and early 20th century. The composer is widely known as one of the earliest music writers for “Tin Pan Alley.”
Background & Education
Washington, D.C., was his birthplace. He received his education from the Naval Academy and the Maryland Military. By age 20, he had learned the piano and violin and had begun composing his songs.
Career Highlights
He earned initial fame in the early 1900s when he collaborated with his spouse, Theodora Morse, on several famous songs, including “Blue Bell” and “Another Rag.” They then joined New York City’s songwriters and music publishers group, “Tin Pan Alley,” and were listed as the “Terriss & Morse.”
Shortly after the First World War, his song “Blue Bell, the Dawn is Waking…” earned enormous popularity in Germany due to the marching rhythm the song possessed. Several musicians made different versions of the song. However, when the Nazis gained power, the song was used as a “Hitler Youth march,” with different lyrics, and it was titled “Deutschland, du Land der Treue.”
Death
The composer died at the age of 51 in New York City on May 25, 1924, after battling severe pneumonia.
