About Théodore Géricault
Jean-Louis Andre Theodore Gericault, famously known as Theodore Gericault, was a famous French painter and lithographer of the 19th century. He loved riding horses and was known for his dramatic paintings that reflected his flamboyant personality. He was part of the pioneers of the “Romantic art movement”.
Early Life & Education
He was a native of Rouen, France. As a student, he learned the English traditions of sporting art from the great French painter Carle Vernet. Additionally, he also mastered classicist figure composition and construction under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. He later studied at the “Louvre”.
Major Works
His initial major work, “The Charging Chasseur” was exhibited in 1812 at the Paris Salon. The artwork revealed his in-depth understanding of contemporary artworks and the influence of his art style. It gave him several recognitions. In 1814, he also exhibited “Wounded Cuirassier” at the Paris Salon.
His most famous artwork and the masterpiece “The Raft of the Medusa” were in 1819. The painting depicted the tragedy of a French shipwreck called “Meduse” in which the captain abandoned the passengers and crew to die.
In 1821, he produced “The Derby of Epsom” in England.
Death
He died at age 32 on 26 January 1824 in Paris, France. The painter had suffered chronic tuberculosis infections.
