About Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough was arguably the most important English artist of the mid to late 18th century. He was a versatile artist who did landscape and portrait paintings, printmaking and was also a draughtsman.
Early life
He lived in Sudbury at the “Gainsborough’s House” during his childhood.
In 1740, his family allowed him to leave home to pursue an artistic career in London. During his stay in London, he trained under English painter William Hogarth and the French engraver Hubert Gravelot.
Major works & Legacy
He had several exhibitions in Suffolk, Bath, and London between the 1760s and 1770s.
He was an assistant to Francis Hayman and helped him decorate the super boxes at “Vauxhall Garden,” London. He also painted one image to decorate the “Thomas Coram Foundation for Children.”
His famous works included “The Blue Boy” and “Mr. and Mrs. Andrews,” displayed at the Huntington Library and National Gallery, London.
He is credited to be amongst the originators of the “18th-century British landscape school.” He was also among the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts, London.
Death
After suffering from cancer, he died in London at age 60, on August 2, 1788.
