Thomas Hardy was a celebrated English poet, novelist and short story writer famous for his novels such as 1874's Far from the Madding Crowd, 1891's Tess of the d'Urbervilles and 1895's Jude the Obscure. He is regarded as one of the most renowned writers in the history of English literary.
He was the eldest of the four children of his parents Jemima and Thomas. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Emma Gifford from 1874 to 1912. He married his second wife Florence Dugdale in 1914. He and Florence remained married until his death in 1928.
He died without ever fathering any children.
He dictated his last poem to his wife moments before he died.
