About Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann was a celebrated German novelist, essayist and short story writer known for being the author of a number of famous books such as The Magic Mountain, Doctor Faustus andDeath in Venice. He won the highly prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929 and the Goethe Prize in 1949.
He was the son of Thomas Johann Mann and Júlia da Silva Bruhns. He had an older brother named Heinrich Mann, who was also a prominent writer. He and Katia Pringsheim got married in 1905. The couple produced six children. Their children Golo, Kalus and Erika Mann grew up to become famous writers.
He was one of the prominent Germans who strongly opposed Nazism and Adolf Hitler. He was forced to flee Germany for Switzerland in 1933 when Hitler eventually came to power. As a result of his relentless opposition to Hitler, his German citizenship was eventually revoked in 1936 by the Nazi regime.
He was bisexual and struggled with his sexuality.
