Thomas Rolfe Rank
About Thomas Rolfe
His birth achieved two things: It represented the link between the English and the Powhatan people. It also secured a line of descendants that has spanned over seven generations.
Early Life
In the English colony of Virginia in 1615, he was born as the only child of John Rolfe, an English businessman, and Pocahontas, the famous Native American princess.
Family
Trying to retrace his roots, he returned to Virginia in 1635. With the governor's permission, he was able to connect with his maternal relatives in an era where colonial laws forbade interaction between the English and the Powhatan people. While in Virginia, he cultivated his inherited lands and established himself as a rich plantation owner.
Personal Life
He married Jane Poythress, the daughter of a rich Virginia landlord. They had a daughter.
Legacy
His half-European and half-American ancestry helped restore peace between the Powhatan people and the English settlers.

He appeared as a baby in the 2005 film “The New World.” The film, which was directed and written by Terrence Malick, starred Colin Farrell, Christopher Plummer, Christian Bale, and Wes Studi.
