About Thomas Szasz
Thomas Szasz was a very popular Hungarian-American psychiatrist who was of the opinion that mental illnesses were not like physical illnesses but rather a metaphor for some problems that humans go through.
He made his arguments known to the public through his numerous books such as “The Manufacture of Madness” and “The Myth of Mental Illness”. He also worked at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University as a professor.
Family
He spent his early years with his parents Lily and Gyula Szász. He was married to Rosine Loshkajian and together they raised two daughters.
Education
He read physics at the University of Cincinnati and also studied at State University of New York.
Awards
Throughout his career, Szasz received many awards like the Humanist Laureate Award, and the Martin Buber Award. In 1973, he was voted the “Humanist of the Year” by the American Humanist Association. He was also selected into some prestigious organizations such as the American Psychoanalytic Association, and the American Psychiatric Association.
Trivia
He was of the view that psychiatric hospitals were more of prisons than hospitals.
He was the co-founder of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights.
