About Thorstein Veblen
Thorstein Veblen was a highly-rated Norwegian-American economist credited for developing the “conspicuous consumption” concept which explains consumer’s behavior after purchasing and using quality and expensive goods.
He made this assertion in his 1899 book titled “The Theory of the Leisure Class” in which he also came up with the concept “conspicuous leisure”. He went on to publish many popular books with some titled “An Inquiry into the Nature of Peace and the Terms of Its Perpetuation” and “The Theory of Business Enterprise”.
He also lectured at a number of universities such as the University of Missouri, and the University of Chicago.
Family
He spent his childhood with his parents Kari Bunde and Thomas Veblen alongside eleven other siblings. Between 1888 and 1911, he was married to Ellen Rolfe. He later settled with Ann Bradley who died in 1920.
Education
He studied at Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, and Carleton College.
Facts
He was trained by American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce.
Veblen’s research laid the foundation for the study of institutional economics.
