American baseball catcher Thurman Lee Munson was often compared to baseball legends such as Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, and Lou Gehrig. From 1970 to 1979, Munson dominated the game like no other catcher in history.

Family Life
He was born in Akron, Ohio, but was raised in Canton. He attended Canton's Lehman High School and Kent State University, where he played with pitcher Steve Stone.
Career
The New York Yankees chose him as the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 1968 amateur draft. He batted 302 hits, 7 home runs, and 57 RBIs in 1970, earning his first of seven All-Star selections in 1971.

Munson helped the Yankees become American League Champions twice – in 1977 and 1978.

His Death
Thurman Munson died at the age of 32 on August 2, 1979, while trying to land his aircraft at Akron-Canton Airport. He broke his neck in the collision and died of asphyxiation. The New York Yankees retired his jersey number 15 to pay homage to his enormous contribution to the sport.
A plaque was erected in his honor in Monument Park.
