About Tokugawa Ieyasu
Tokugawa Ieyasu was a Japanese military dictator (known by the title shogun) who was officially in office from 1603 to 1605. He founded the Tokugawa shogunate, the military government which would go on to rule Japan until 1868.
He is also remembered as one of three unifiers of Japan. Even after abdicating his title as the shogun in 1605 for his son Tokugawa Hidetada, he remained a ruler in the capacity of ‘ogosho’, a title given to a retired shogun.
Family Life
He was born, Matsudaira Takechiyo, to Odai no Kata and Matsudaira Hirotada. He was 15 when he married Lady Tsukiyama, his first wife. She bore him a son and a daughter. His second wife, Asahi no kata, did not bear children. He had about 15 more children with his concubines.
Death
He died in 1616, aged 73.
Trivia
After his death, he was given the name “Tōshō Daigongen” (meaning the “Great Gongen, Light of the East”) according to his wish to be deified.
