About Tommy Douglas
Tommy Douglas moved to Saskatchewan after his college education to work as a Calvary Baptist Church minister. While serving as a preacher, he joined the political party known as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, and in 1935 he was voted into Canada’s House of Commons.
Between 1944 and 1961, he served as the Prime Minister of Saskatchewan. After leaving office, he was appointed the leader of the newly created New Democratic Party. He was known for his stance against the War Measures Act in 1970.
Family
His parents were Thomas Douglas and Annie Clement. He was married to Irma Dempsey and they had two kids named Joan Douglas Tulchinsky and Shirley Douglas who would become a well-known actress. He was the grandfather of actor Kiefer Sutherland.
Education
Douglas was a Brandon College student before doing his master’s program at McMaster University. He later attended the University of Chicago.
Honors
He was a recipient of the Order of Canada medal in 1981.
Trivia
At age 15, he trained as an amateur boxer.
He suffered osteomyelitis in his early years.
CBC Television, in 2004, named him "The Greatest Canadian".
