This singer and Western swing vocalist gained fame singing for the band The Texas Playboys. Tommy Duncan rose from a poor farm boy to become one of the most influential Western singers of his era.
Early Life
Tommy Duncan was born on a small farm in Whitney, Texas in a family of sixteen. He left home at the age of thirteen to pick cotton on his cousin’s farm. This country singer got his first taste of performing when he beat 64 others to get a spot in the Light Crust Doughboys, a popular local Western swing band.
Career and Honors
Duncan formed the band The Texas Playboys with fellow Western swing musician Bob Wills in 1933. Their most popular hit was “New San Antonio Rose”, which sold over three million copies. They recorded other songs like “Time Changes Everything” and “Take Me Back to Tulsa” which showcased Duncan’s distinctive and smooth voice.
Tommy Duncan also appeared in films like “Blazing the Western Trail” and “Lawless Empire”. In the latter, a 1945 Western film directed by filmmaker Vernon Keays, the musician starred alongside Charles Starrett, Tex Harding, and his band mate Bob Wills.
He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
Death
He died of heart-related problems in 1967, aged 56.
