About Tony Hancock
English comedian Tony Hancock was described as a man of solitude. He was associated with comedy script writers Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.
Personal Life
He grew up in Bournemouth and lived with his father together with his brothers. After his father’s death in 1964, he and his older brothers moved to stay with their mother and stepfather.
He studied at Durlston Court Preparatory School and Bradford College.
Comedy Career
He joined the Royal Air Force Regiment during the Second World War. He became a part-time comedian at Windmill theatre, a place that nurtured comedian’s talents.
His appearance on the BBC show “Educating Archie”, earning him a bit of national recognition.
He participated in other BBC shows like the “Variety Bandbox” and “Kaleidoscope”.
Aside from comedy he was also an actor and featured in movies like, “The Punch and Judy Man”, “Others Are Others”, “The Rebel” and “The Wrong Box”.
Legacy
In Old Square, Birmingham, there is a sculpture (made by Bruce William) in honor of the renowned comedian.
In 2002, Hancock was voted by his BBC listeners as the best comedian.
Death
He committed suicide by overdosing on amobarbital. The comedian died at age 44.
