About Tony Hulman
By purchasing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1945, Tony Hulman, a cunning businessman, contributed to the preservation of both America's historic race and its historic racetrack.
Background
He attended Yale's Sheffield Scientific School. He was 17 when he joined the American Red Cross Ambulance Corps during World War I (WWI). He wed Mary Fendrich, with whom he had two children – Mari and Mary.
Career
By the age of 30, he had worked his way up the corporate ladder at his father's business to become President. Hulman and Company, a general wholesale company that sold everything from catcher's gloves to baking powder, served as the cornerstone for his success.
He acquired Indianapolis Motor Speedway in part to advance his Clabber Girl merchandise. After his extensive course modifications, he was able to turn the Indianapolis 500 into a great American race, one of the most well-known and popular athletic events in history.
Honors
In 1990, he was admitted to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. A year later, he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
He was honored with the Golden Plate Award by the American Academy of Achievement in 1975.
Death
He died of heart failure on October 27, 1977, aged 76.
