Career
In the 1940’s, he was an MC and a singer on “Tune-Up Time” on CBS with Andre Kostelanetz. In 1954 he started working as a host on “The Tony Martin Show” on NBC. The show aired for about two years.
He had featured in “Follow the Fleet” in 1936 where he had played the role of a sailor. He went on to act in a few musicals. In 1942, he became a part of the US Navy where he was a chief specialist.
Personal Life
He was from a Jewish family and his grandparents were immigrants from Eastern Europe. His grandmother gifted him a saxophone when he was ten. He started playing and falling in love with music.
He schooled in Oakland High School and moved on to St Mary’s College where he joined the grammar school glee club. There he played the clarinet and saxophone. In Oakland Technical High School, he started his first band which he named “The Red Peppers”.
