She is also known for starring in films such as 1996's Mother, May I Sleep with Danger and 2007's Cthulhu. Her autobiography Stori Telling came out in 2008 and rose to the number one spot on the New York Times Best Seller list.

She is the daughter of Candy and Aaron Spelling, who was a renowned film and television producer. She is the elder sister of former actor Randy Spelling. Her first marriage was to actor Charlie Shanian in 2004. The couple divorced in 2006. That same year, she got married to her second husband Dean McDermott. The couple had their fourth child in 2011.
