About Torquato Tasso
When talking about Torquato Tasso’s credits as a poet, it is certainly not a short list. One of his great poems was “Gerusalemme liberate”. Published in 1591, the poem, which translates to “Jerusalem Delivered”, gives an imaginative version of the struggle that took place Christians and Muslims during the First Crusade.
Family and Education
He was the son of Bernardo Tasso and Porzia de Rossi. He had his education under The Society of Jesus (the Jesuits).
Career
It’s been estimated that Tasso wrote over 350 poems. He dedicated two of his books to Lucrezia Bendido and Eleonora d’Este to show his appreciation to them for the support and care they had given him during his stay at Castle Ferrara. Other famous works of his include: “Aminta”, “Dialoghi and “Discorsi del poema eroico”.
In 1578, he was sent to asylum after it was believed that he was suffering from bipolarity.
Influence
His poems played a significant role in the works of prominent people including the Italian composer and priest Claudio Monteverde. Similarly Giacomo Leopardi and Lord Byron all took some inspiration from the works of Torquato Tasso.
