About Townsend Hoopes
A government official and an American historian, he was named Townsend Walter Hoopes II at birth and eventually became the Under Secretary of the Air Force.
Personal Life
Most people called him Tim and he was a graduate of Phillips Academy before moving on to Yale University. During his days at the university, he was the football team captain. He also attended National War College. He made Marion Schmidt his wife but the marriage did not survive. He later married Ann Merrifield and they were together till he died. At the end of his life, he had two sons and a daughter.
Career
He took part in the Second World War as a Marine Lieutenant in the Pacific theatre. In 1947, he became the assistant to the House Armed Services Committee chairman. He went on to become staff aide for about five years to three Defense Secretaries. In 1964, the secretary of Defense of International Affairs had him as his Deputy Assistant. He was also a writer whose book “The Limits of Intervention” became popular. The book also served as his memoire. Other books he authored include “The Devil and John Foster Dulles” (1973) and “Eye Power”.
