About Tracy Hall
Tracy Hall was only a fourth-grader when he declared his dream to be a General Electric employee. In 1948, his dream came true when he was hired by the General Electric Research Laboratory after earning a PhD in physical chemistry. He is remembered best for his invention of the synthetic diamond which went on to become a cash cow for General Electric. He served at Brigham Young University from 1955 as a chemistry professor and Director of Research.
Family Life
He was raised on a Marriot, Utah farm. He was married to Ida-Rose Langford from 1941 until his death. They had seven children together.
Achievements
He received the 1970 Chemical Pioneer Award from the American Institute of Chemists, the 1972 American Chemical Society Award for Creative Invention and the 1994 Utah Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology.
Death
He died in Provo, Utah on July 25, 2008 aged 88.
