Tranquillo Barnetta played as a midfielder in the Swiss national team from 2004 -2014. In that period, he was part of the Swiss team that played at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 20014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He was nominated for the "Best Young Player" award in the former.
Career Highlights
Barnetta's professional career began with his native team St. Gallen in the 2002-03 season where he made over 25 appearances and scored more than 12 goals. He moved on to play for German side Bayer Leverkusen from 2004 to 2012, earning more than 180 appearances and scoring over 20 goals.
The player signed a three-year professional contract with FC Schalke 04 on July 2, 2012, and played with them until June 30, 2015. He played one season at Eintracht Frankfurt and returned to Schalke 04 in 2014, scoring his first goal for Schalke during the 2014–15 season.
Barnetta signed with Philadelphia Union in 2015. He earned more than 35 appearances and scored a few goals.
He returned to St. Fallen in November 2016 and played his final seasons until he retired at the close of the 2018–19 season.
International career
The midfielder played in the Swiss U-17 team and won the 2002 U-17 European Championship. He also played in the senior team and was present at the 2006 World Cup hosted in Germany where he scored the second goal.
