About Ub Iwerks
Ub Iwerks was an American animator, cartoonist, inventor, character designer and special effects technician. Ubbe Ert Iwwerks, recognized posthumously as a Disney Legend, he is best remembered for his contributions to the animation studio’s early success. He is a co-creator of the Mickey Mouse character and is also credited with the creation of the Flip the Frog and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit characters. During his time at Walt Disney Animation Studios, he also worked on animations for productions such as “Silly Symphonies” and “Song of the South”.
Family Life
His German immigrant father abandoned him in his teens and he grew up into adulthood not wanting anything to do with him. He married Mildred Sarah Henderson in 1927 and they had two sons together, including Donald Iwerks, who later became a Disney executive and Legend.
Achievements
He is a Visual Effects Society Award Hall of Famer and a Windsor McCay Award winner.
He died on July 7, 1971 from a heart attack.
