About Umm Kulthum
Umm Kulthum was the stage name of Fatima Ibrahim es-Sayyid el-Beltagi, a singer, songwriter and actress of Egyptian descent. She rose from a humble background to stardom in her career, which lasted from the 1920s to the 1970s. She is remembered for her unique contralto vocals and is viewed as one of the best singers in Arab music’s history. Her notable songs include “Ghaneely Shwaya Shwaya”, “Walad Al Hoda”, “La Ya Habibi”, “Fat Al Mi’aad” and “Al Amal”.

She was the daughter of Ibrahim El-Sayyid El-Beltagi, an imam and Fatmah El-Maleegi, a housewife. She had a brother named Khalid.
Legacy
She was given nicknames such as “Egypt’s fourth pyramid” and “The voice of Egypt” due to the honor she brought to Egypt within the context of the Arab world.
Death
She died from kidney failure on February 3, 1975.
