About Valeska Suratt
Valeska Suratt was an American stage and silent film actress who gained notoriety for her sensuous motions and incredibly expensive, glitzy clothes and gowns. Some magazines even dubbed her the most elegant lady on stage.
Career
Prior to her 1906 Broadway debut in the musical “The Belle of Mayfair”, she had appearances in vaudeville. She appeared in “Hip! Hip! Hooray” the year after.
William Jay Gaynor, New York City’s mayor, canceled her Broadway musical, “The Girl with the Whooping Cough”, shortly after its premiere in 1910, claiming it was too sexually explicit. She joined Fox Studio in 1915 and went on to appear in movies like "Immigrant" and "Jealousy".
Personal Life
She quit school in 1899 and began working at a photography studio. She relocated to Indianapolis and worked as an assistant in a department store's millinery. She was married twice and had no children. Her first marriage was to vaudeville comedian William J. Flannery (aka Billy Gould). The marriage lasted from 1904 to 19011.
